Dog-rescue organizations do an incredible work in our communities, and their efforts improve the lives of countless animals that have strayed, been abandoned, or have lost their homes through no fault of their own.
Adoption fees are a very small percentage of the money needed to provide veterinary care, food, rehabilitation and training so these dogs can find new, loving homes. Public donations are crucial to the success of any rescue.
Monetary Donations
While material goods are most welcome, rescues also need regular monetary donations. Monetary donations can come in cash or gift cards.
- Veterinary Care: Topping the list of monetary needs is veterinary care and surgeries. Many dogs that come into rescues are infested with parasites, or suffer from skin diseases such as mange. Others may have injuries from other animals attacking them, or broken limbs. Some need dental work, vaccinations and spay/neuter before they can be adopted.
- Quality Food and Treats: A lot of dogs that come into rescues are malnourished and need quality food to regain their health. Healthy treats aid with rehabilitation and training.
- Shelter Expenses: Physical shelter property must pay rent or mortgage, utilities, security and general property upkeep. Monetary donations help with these expenses, and with expansion when needed.
- Cleaning and Kennel Supplies: Cleaning supplies are a big expense for rescues, because they must maintain proper sanitation to keep animals healthy. Shelters need dog food and water bowls and pet beds, collars and leashes.
- Behavioral and Rehabilitation Training: If a rescue dog is to have a chance at a forever home, many times it must overcome trauma, fear or lack of training. Specialized training is a necessary expense for rescues.
- Transportation: Transportation for rescues requires fuel, vehicle purchase and maintenance, and transport kennels.
- Advertising and Rescue News: Adoptable animals must be in front of the public so they’ll have the best chance of finding a home. Advertising in local media and on social media is expensive, and office supplies are also needed.
Most Appreciated Donations
- Dog Food & Treats: Unopened bags of adult or puppy kibble, canned/wet dog food, and training treats.
- Cleaning Supplies: Paper towels, laundry detergent, bleach, disinfectant wipes, floor cleaners, and dish soap, heavy duty mops, brooms, buckets, and other cleaning tools are always in need. Puppy pee pads are always appreciated.
- Dog Beds: New or used (in good condition) washable dog beds, fleece blankets, elevated beds, and towels.
- Training Supplies: Non-retractable leashes, collars, and crates.
- Durable Toys: Rubber or nylon chew toys and balls.
